Burgers at Berwick Street Market

The Original Heartbreaker Burger from Tongue n Cheeks, Berwick Street Market Some of the best things happen when you’re least expecting them to. Like last Thursday, when a cancelled lunch meeting threw up an accidental London street food opportunity. This one wasn’t anything new. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. And it certainly wasn’t planned. But it just happened to slot in rather nicely as a break between jobs, so really it had everything... Read More

100 London street foods: Berwick Street Market

Sub-Terrannean sandwich from Sub Cult, Berwick Street Market, Soho Last week I took a few days off to have a holiday in London. This, I think, is one of the ultimate luxuries, as it enables you to scamper about in the city while everyone else is at work. You can delve into art galleries you never normally get into during the working week, linger in boutiques that on most days close at the very moment you step out of the office, and have coffee and... Read More

New seller: Banhmi11

Fish banh mi On this rainy afternoon I would like to introduce something that I reckon if you think about enough, might even warm you up. This is Banhmi11, a London street food stall run by Van and Anh who I have eaten from a few times in the last year, the first being at the eat.st (now Kerb Food) and Fifteen restaurant’s 15th birthday held near Old Street held over the summer and otherwise at Hackney’s Broadway Market. If you’re in... Read More

New seller: Pizza Pilgrims

Margherita pizza If you are having a bit of an off day, I know a team of people who you can count on to cheer you up. Two brothers, James and Thom Elliot began their street food business Pizza Pilgrims around a year ago. And what a year it has been. In that time they have squeezed into a tiny van and driven around London on numerous occasions, they have probably made more dough than you could pile into the back of a small lorry, spun it into more... Read More

Shh… secret pop-up dinner in Soho

What’s cooking? Do you want to go downstairs for dinner at Blacks? Wahey, it’s the Olympic Games. It’s a sporting frenzy. And if you’d asked me six months ago what I’d be doing on a Monday night in August, I’d probably have said writing about street food. Certainly not watching gymnastics or swimming races or beach volley ball. Or diving or hockey. But I’m glued. That said, I am also eating plenty of street... Read More

London Streating: part 2 (east London street food eating)

This has accidentally become long and east London heavy because I did a big loop one weekend. Perhaps I’ll do a south London street food tour next time…and so on.. DALSTON STREET FEAST I never intended to end up eating street food on Friday night a fortnight ago but on walking straight out of Dalston Junction train station I had a flyer handed to me saying there was a new food and drink market on Fridays. Huh? This is news to me, I thought.... Read More

Pizza Pilgrims: Berwick Street Market’s much needed boost

Nduja and Portobello mushroom pizza from Pizza Pilgrims This featured in last Thursday’s London Evening Standard but for those of you who didn’t catch it, please see my review of Pizza Pilgrims on Berwick Street below. While I’m on the subject of write ups and LondonStreetFoodie.co.uk, I want to add that this isn’t so much a street food review site as a guide for people to use in the city. There is a great deal of street food... Read More

The return of the top trailers

Lots of exciting news today. 1. Checked in at the new Pitt Cue Co restaurant in Soho last week on one of its soft opening nights. It’s a tiny wee place with just 20 seats but there’s a bar at the top for whisky, beer, wine and, if you’re up to it, their latest version of the infamous Pickle Back and Skin shots. The pulled pork, St Louis ribs and “burnt and mash” were all scrumptious and I hear Jamie and the gang have... Read More

Pitt Cue Co goes permanent

One of my favourite street food outlets from this summer was Pitt Cue Co, a silver airstream trailer based on the Southbank which was responsible for shifting some of the best pulled pork, beef brisket and BBQ ribs in London. If you got there early enough, you could get stuck into pork sitting happily on top of crunchy coleslaw, fennel-scented pickles and excellent charred sourdough bread – all packaged up in a cardboard box. Also memorable... Read More
