London Street Food Tips in 200: Saba’s Taste of Ethiopia

Ahoy there, London street food-ers – happy Thursday! It’s also international women’s day! So, to celebrate, here’s the second in the new series of short London Street Food Tips written in 200 words only (the first was Lahpet in Spitalfields).
Introducing Saba’s Taste of Ethiopia – one of the best lunch spots in Brixton and some of my favourite London street food.
Where is it? Brixton Station Road Market, offering a mixture of Sudanese, Moroccan and Japanese food (serves Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri/Sat & every other Sun, Herne Hill market).
What drew you in? The bewitching smell of chickpea & cabbage stew – and a race to get the last portion.
Who’s behind it? Longtime cook and Brixton resident, Saba, who four years ago decided she wanted more people to enjoy & understand her favourite dishes. There’s a loyal following.
What else is on the menu? Stews come with rice or injera (spongy, sour Ethiopian flatbread made with teff flour and fermented). Includes mesir wot (spicy red lentils with berbere spice mix – ground chillies, paprika, ginger, cardamom, coriander & fenugreek); cabbage stew with garlic, red onion and ginger; kik alichia (a turmeric & garlic-heavy split pea stew). Portions (£6) are big enough to share or finish up for dinner.
What does the food do to you? Warms you up, and fuels an afternoon’s work. Also makes you question your own cooking abilities – how many hours would it take to make a stew this good?
Closing thoughts? One of the finest meals in London. And this market needs support so don’t pass it by. Go visit.
