Exclusive: new London street food kitchen from The Bowler

OK here’s some really exciting news for you all.

One of my earliest favourite London street food traders is Jez Felwick who, after quitting a life in TV, started up his own grass covered wagon, The Bowler, serving excellent meatballs with pasta, meatball subs and more. He and his black bowler hat have popped up at many a Street Feast, KERB market, and others. Furthermore, not only is he a good cook but also passionate about his work, excitable and knowledgeable – the perfect street food combination.

Well now he is to open his very own spot called Street Food Kitchen, and the fun starts on Wednesday 24th September.

For lunch and dinners until spring 2015, Jez will be running out of the refurbished Horse & Groom Pub on Curtain Road in Shoreditch (a well-known east London music venue that has undergone a facelift), serving some of his staple dishes plus other recipes currently found in his lovely book The Bowlers Meatball Cookbook.

In his own words: “We have been approached by a number of venues to take on the food offering but when we met the Horse & Groom we got excited that the whole venue was getting a makeover and the opportunity to be part of that really appealed.  It is well placed for both City and Shoreditch lunch trade, as well as the evenings and makes a perfect event space where we can also park food trucks outside.”

Jez wants to keep as many elements of his London street food business intact, so while you can order as usual and sit upstairs, if you want takeaway food you can get it from an open plan kitchen counter, which maintains the face to face contact you get in markets. You will also be able to eat from a small service station downstairs which will be known as the DJ Bar Snacks counter, serving smaller things like Nacho Balls and sliders. A Street Food Pantry will sell condiments that started out being sold on the street including The Ribman & Prairie Fire BBQ hot sauces, as well as Popcorn Kitchen.

Not content with his own kitchen, Jez is planning some parties, too, and will be hosting Street Food Kitchen Takeovers with his friends from the London street food scene including other LSF favourites, Anna Maes Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Luardos Mexican and Spit ‘n’ Roast.
