StockMKT launches in Bermondsey
Friday 2nd December saw the first StockMKT, a fantastic street food and crafts market held in Bermondsey Square, SE1, which the creators hope will happen again in 2012.
My friend Ghislaine and I braced the cold and trudged through hoards of late night shoppers crowding Bermondsey Street before stumbling upon this friendly cow signalling the entrance to StockMKT.
Along the first right-hand row of stalls we discovered Spice Monkey’s Mumbai-style street food, a new Mexican street food stall that I didn’t know called Santana Grill (includes burritos made with 6-hr slow cooked beef – delicious) and the very lovely team from Churros Garcia who make hot Spanish churros by spinning the hot dough around in a pool of oil and serving them straight up in front of you with a cup of dark chocolate sauce (best after the burrito not before!).
Bang in the middle was Abiye and his Big Apple Hot Dogs trailer. He’d come south straight from his regular pitch on Old Street roundabout to see if he could get people to help him name his new hot dog – after trying out this new giant Dog with all the trimmings (I would recommend it once you find out what it’s called), we left him muttering about moving up to Dalston’s The Long Table later on…
Also on the scene were Danny and Sarah of Kimchi Cult selling their excellent Kimchi burgers, our Bhangra Burger man Alec running a roaring trade in Indian spiced patties in buns, the Egg Boss of Clapham’s Venn St Market selling gourmet Scotch eggs and mobile coffee company Dark Fluid who sold us a seriously intense but happily body-warming hot chocolate.
The big freeze turned out to be a great warmup for whatever comes next year.
